Sunday, July 21, 2002 Avoid horizontal scrolling (usually) Remember that horizontal scrolling is caused by content being wider than the window not the screen :-) --Andrew, who gives the best answers on hwg-techniques. I have seen people who feel they must avoid ALL scrolling. While most web pages, especially opening or home pages should not be overly long, vertical scrolling is perfectly ok (in English and any read left-to-right languages). The user doesn't much mind scrolling a bit ever few paragraphs. With horizontal scrolling, however, they must scroll over and back for EVERY line, and that is a major annoyance! The only time I've seen it look all right is for a picture gallery effect, where images were lined up left to right as if on a gallery wall, and it was not necessary to scroll up and down. |
